Greetings, writ large!
Or at least larger. :) I've heard from some that the SOJ News is a bit hard to read in the smaller font I was using, so I hope this is better.
The big news this week is, of course, the election. It's now history, but the feelings stirred up remain. For the next few days, bloggers and columnists on both sides will keep coming to terms with what's happened. I look forward to calmer waters and clearer heads soon. I've been reflecting on what it means to be part of a participatory democracy and contrasting that with what it means to live into the kin-dom of God. I've certainly seen glimpses of justice and peace on the horizon, and I look forward to our worship time together as we keep casting what I hope is Jesus' vision forward.
A few events coming up:
Tomorrow morning at 8:00, the men's group gets together. Mike's responsible for breakfast, so it's bound to be good! Then at 9:30 or so, we'll welcome all comers to help with the winterizing of the church. There's plenty for everyone to do, and the more hands on-deck, the more fun it will be! See you there!
Study hour continues with the second half of our conversation on healing. Then in worship, we'll focus on healing and wholeness as a community of faith, nation, and world. The worshipful conversation (which is how I think of sermons these days) will center around the gospel passage where Jesus speaks of a house divided and about wholeness. For our prayer weaving, we'll focus on times in our lives when we've known wholeness or healing, as well as our ongoing needs for the same. We'll add to the worship wall we're creating, and again, I'll ask the children to help weave our prayers together.
The Ministry council meets Tuesday night at 7:00. All are welcome to be part of the discussion.
The Transition Ministry will meet with me to talk about how things are going so far on Thursday night at 7:00.
The youth groups met separately Wednesday night and will do so again for more age-appropriate activity and discussion. Special note: this week and next Katy Maxa is in Willie Wonka at Lakeville North. If you know of other youth or children who have upcoming games, performances, etc., where we can show our support by our presence, please let me know.
Next week we'll start a new study for a few weeks on how church and state relate. Think hot button issues like prayer in schools, court house nativity displays, state house ten commandment plaques, religious school vouchers. We'll talk about some Supreme Court decisions and the political and religious issues behind them.
To prepare for the first session, read James Madison's Memorial and Remonstrance and Thomas Jefferson's Virginia Act for Establishing Religious Freedom. The language will seem archaic (it's the 18th century after all), but the ideas will sound current.
Please let me know if you plan to be here. That way we can have enough food. Dinner at 6:00. Study at 7:00. Be here when you can.
I look forward to seeing you in the morning, tomorrow and Sunday!
Blessings and Peace,
