Voice of Joy! May 14, 2013

The Voice of Joy!

This is certainly a historic day in Minnesota. It's not often that churches see something they are passionate about become public policy. As a congregation called to respect and honor human dignity in the sight of God, we have a lot to be grateful for when Governor Dayton signs the marriage bill into law later this afternoon.

Of course, we're a Christian congregation, not a lobbying organization. Our commitment to social justice leads us to advocate in both private and public ways to make a difference for good: through hunger relief, environmental care, economic fairness, and support for those affected by circumstances beyond their control. These are part of the outward journey of our faith.

The inward journey matters just as much. So we engage in ministries of centering prayer, healing, study, and spiritual disciplines that ground us in God and guide our steps.

In worship, we bring these inward and outward journeys together. The image I have is of a joyful dance. Through reflection on scripture and life, joining our voices and hearts in song, offering the best of what we have in service, and sharing a common meal, we recommit ourselves to our journey together.

I'm glad to be part of it all with you today.

See you this week!

Blessings and Peace,
David Cobb

Sean McGee Seeking MN AIDS Walk Sponsors

The Minnesota AIDS Walk is a 10K fundraiser that will be held next Sunday, May 19 (so we won't see Sean that day). If you'd like to sponsor him with a tax-deductible donation, you can make out a check to MN AIDS Walk and mail it to Sean this week at 15589 Eagles Nest Way, Apple Valley MN 55124.

Muffins and Mimosas Saturday

Or is it Mimosas and Muffins? Either way, the women of the church are invited to Harriet Becker's home this Saturday at 11:00 a.m.

St. Stephen's Shelter Saturday

We have all the food we need for St. Stephen's Shelter. We're providing everything except the main course, which is being prepared by First Christian Church in Minneapolis. If you want to help serve, there are still a few openings for those who hear the call. Come, make a difference.

Summer and Money

As the weather warms, thoughts turn to summer trips. To help you remember the church while you're away, we'll have envelopes on the table in the narthex. You're welcome to take one with you the Sunday before you plan to be gone so we can continue to make a difference joyfully this summer.

Upcoming expenses beyond our regular giving include needed repairs on the AC and heating systems, exterior repairs to the church building, and moving David's family's furniture and other household things from Lynchburg to Minnesota in July, which is when they need to move out of their temporary furnished housing into a longer-term home.

Teen Bible Week Two

The Teen Bible Basic to Advanced class is meeting this Sunday immediately after worship, from noon to 1:00. Remember to read Spong, chapters 1-2. The candy dish will be full.

Pentecost: Wear Red

This Sunday is Pentecost. Please wear red to worship, if you have it, to celebrate the presence of the Holy Spirit and the Birthday of the Church. And watch out for low-flying birds (yes, that's a hint).

Time for Gardening

It's warm enough now to do some gardening work at church. Watch your email for an announcement about a time we can come together to beautify the grounds outside. We would like to do some significant work to lay out a labyrinth for prayer and meditation. The project is still in early phases, but it's certain to provide opportunities for good ministry.

Want to Build a Cabin?

Let's take a field trip together! David's going down to Newton, Iowa, for the BIG BUILD at the Christian Conference Center (this is our region's campground) Friday and Saturday of Memorial Day weekend, May 24-25.

The goal: build three cabins. Yeah, it's a Big Build!

If you'd like to go, let David know and register here. There's no cost for the weekend, and if you like, you can stay and work through Monday. A sign up sheet is in the narthex.
Wednesday Night
6:00 dinner
7:00 study
7:00 youth groups
How to Think Theologically
PENTECOST
Pentecost marks the beginning of the next season of the church year, which will carry us through the summer and fall.

Plan on a special Pentecost celebration in worship on May 19. Also, if you have it,WEAR RED, the color associated with the Holy Spirit. It will be great to have a whole sea of red throughout the sanctuary!
